Episode 13: What Killed Keith Haring?
February 6th, 2009
In this week’s podcast, the first full podcast with Celia Farber as co-host, we interview longstanding activist, cultural critic, and incidental AIDS historian Jim Fouratt who reveals the shocking truth about what really killed artist Keith Haring. Was it AIDS?
We also talk to Jim about how and why early AIDS activism morphed into pharmaceutical and scientific fascism– and how the early values of the Gay Liberation movement–chiefly freedom of speech and the freedom to be different–were destroyed in the process. Jim describes the panic that spread through the gay community and how their wish to avoid talking about lifestyle factors led them into the arms of the pharmaceutical industry.

It’s very inspiring that both David and Celia are pursuing this show and allowing it to continue on. It is indeed what Christine would have wanted, there is no doubt.
Here’s to peaceful activism and focused perseverance.
Wonderful conversation! Keith Harings work was so energetic, full of vitality and so generous and unconditional in his love for life. It beggars belief how deep the denial is in gay communities. Its a thorn in my mind. Well it doesnt beggar belief actually, I’ve seen it here in Dublin, i saw it in the eyes of one of our ‘gay leaders’, I knew he understood! and others too. It’s jus too frightening for them to cross that barrier for so many reasons. It use to enrage me, God bless them.
This interview completely blew me away. What you don’t know can kill you and if you don’t know who’s side those in the forefront are on can really kill you. I am speechless. Thanks for the history lesson.
