Reg is a gay man living in New York City who has been on and off AIDS drugs for more than 15 years. Marlene is a health consultant living in the southern U.S. who has extensively researched the psychological and physical benefits of cannabis oil. Together, Reg and Marlene tell us how the miracle claims made for cannabis oil could be credible, and what it is like to use this substance derived from a strain of the marijuana plant to kick the “anti-retroviral” (ARV) habit once and for all.
Reg tested positive for “HIV” in 1996 and went on the new so-called “cocktails” including protease inhibitors shortly thereafter. After hearing several dissident speakers and reading Christine Maggiore’s book, he understood the AIDS dissident point of view and discontinued his drug regimen. However, he went back on ARVs after a persistent illness and the associated fear and withdrawal symptoms. He has been using cannabis oil to help him stop taking Edurant, Epivir and Viread – his fifth attempt to get off ARVs.
After listening to this Podcast, our listeners might wish to check out the documentary film Run from the Cure, about Canadian farmer Rick Simpson and his invention of cannabis oil; the documentary film What If Cannabis Cured Cancer; the book Why Germs Don’t Make You Ill & Drugs Can’t Cure You (covered in Episode 74 of “How Positive Are You”); and Episode 13 on the untimely death of artist Keith Haring shortly after beginning a ddI (didanosine/Videx)-based drug regimen. The recent feature film Dallas Buyers Club depicts quite a different kind of buyers’ club than the cannabis oil community and was reviewed by co-host Elizabeth Ely here.
A map of the legal status of medical and recreational marijuana in the U.S., by state, is available here. Please note, “medical marijuana” does not necessarily mean easy or legal availability of Rick Simpson/cannabis oil, a concentrated form of certain strains of the plant. A similar map of Canada, by postal code, is here.
